The Crimson Jewel of the Amazon Basin
Add a breath-taking flash of vivid color and dynamic personality to your community aquarium with the Agassiz's Double Red Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma agassizii), a prized jewel of the aquascaping world. Originating from the complex, sediment-rich softwater habitats and leaf-littered environments of the Amazon River Basin, this dwarf cichlid is a visual masterpiece. Its defining feature is unparalleled, striking crimson-to-scarlet red patches that dramatically overlay its entire head and dorsal fin, providing a stunning contrast to its body. This intense color is further contrasted by a dark, shimmering charcoal 'laser' line that runs perfectly through its body, making it a living gem that demands attention.
Why You’ll Love the Agassiz's Double Red Dwarf Cichlid
Iconic & Vivid Aesthetics: Their stark, solid neon-red-on-charcoal "Laser" pattern is unique in the freshwater hobby and provides dramatic, brilliant contrast against both dark wood and light substrate.
Outgoing & Active Personality: Established Double Red Dwarf Cichlids are surprisingly active and outgoing during the day, making them a joy to observe.
Master of the Shoal: Watching a coordinated group (shoal) of 6–10 interaction, complete with dynamic schooling and synchronized movement, is a dynamic, rewarding experience.
Tireless Janitor Force: These are tireless bottom-dwelling scavengers, constantly in motion, sifting through sand and gravel for leftover food and detritus, helping to keep your tank clean.

Pro-Tips for a Happy Dwarf Cichlid
The absolute most critical element for the Agassiz's Double Red Dwarf Cichlid is water parameters. To see their maximum, radiant color, simulate their native environment with very soft, highly acidic blackwater. We highly recommend using a RO/DI water system and incorporating driftwood and peat moss to manage their pH. Provide numerous caves, ceramic tubes, or gaps in rockwork—as Apistogramma species rely heavily on feeling secure in a defined territory.
Aquarist Note: While peaceful, Double Red Dwarf Cichlids are "bottom-competitive". Ensure you have more floor space and multiple suitable caves than you have plecos (e.g., three caves for two corys) to prevent territorial disputes among this otherwise docile species.
