The Chili Rasbora (Boraras brigittae)

The Crimson Ember of the Nano World

Ignite your smallest aquascape with the Chili Rasbora, often celebrated by its other common names, the Mosquito Rasbora or Boraras brigittae. Hailing from the shadowy, slow-moving blackwaters of Southeast Asia, primarily Borneo, this species is a visual marvel of the nanoworld. Its deep, translucent crimson-red body is a perfect canvas for a continuous, horizontal dark black stripe, which is outlined by a luminous neon orange or gold 'fever' line. When kept under proper lighting against a dark background, this stunning galaxy pattern glows like a living ember, demanding attention.

Why You’ll Love the Chili Rasbora

Iconic Ember Aesthetic: The extreme juxtaposition of the solid black body against the sharp orange-gold 'fever' line creates a visual spectacle unique among nano-cyprinids.

Master of the Nano Shoal: Watching a established group (shoal) of 6–10 Chili Rasboras interaction, flash their intense colors, and change direction is a dynamic, rewarding experience.

Master of the Micro Tank: Reaching a final size of 1.5 to 2 cm, they are one of the most practical and popular choices for dedicated nano aquariums (like the 20-liter size).

The "Peaceful" Community Star: They are a highly social, peaceful schooling fish that adds dramatic, active movement without bothering your other fish, making them excellent choices for community nano setups.

Pro-Tips for a Happy Chili

The absolute most critical element for the Chili Rasbora is water parameters. To see their maximum, fiery crimson color, simulate their native environment with very soft, highly acidic blackwater. We highly recommend using a RO/DI water system and incorporating driftwood and peat moss to manage their pH. Provide numerous plants, floating cover, or driftwood structures—as they rely heavily on feeling secure in a well-decorated tank. They must be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10 to prevent extreme stress and shyness.

Aquarist Note: Because of their ultra-delicate, very soft-water nature, we place significant emphasis on proper acclimation. Be sure to check this species' specific requirements for pH (acidic, ideally below 6.0), temperature, and minimum schooling size. For the best visual display, use a single-species shoal in a large, beautifully planted tank!
