The Golden Vampire Pleco (L264)

A Golden Artifact from the Rio Xingu

Behold the Golden Vampire Pleco (or Leporacanthicus cf. galaxias), a fish so distinct and beautifully menacing it could be the subject of lost folklore. While its name may evoke tales of the night, this L264 from the white waters of Brazil is a visual spectacle that demands attention. Its velvety, near-black body is an ancient tapestry, densely woven with brilliant, bright golden or yellow spots—a true collector’s artifact for the dedicated aquarist.

Why You’ll Love the Golden Vampire

Iconic Pattern: The L264 is famous for its perfect "polka dot" aesthetic, with sharp, consistent golden-yellow spots that cover its entire frame.

The "Vampire" Fins: It earns its common name from the sharp, slightly elongated fins and the fascinating "teeth" within its massive mouth structure, giving it an ancient, predatory appearance (though it is peaceful to tankmates).

Robust Personality: These plecos are active during the day and are full of character, often interacting with their hardscape and defending their favored caves.

Impressive Showpiece: While slow-growing, it reaches a size of about 10 inches, making it an undeniable centrepiece for large aquariums.

Pro-Tips for a Happy Vampire

The L264, like most Leporacanthicus, is primarily a carnivore. Their large mouths and specialized dentition are designed for scraping snails and small invertebrates in the wild. Their diet should be anchored by high-protein sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, or mysis shrimp. They thrive in well-oxygenated, warm water with strong filtration to simulate their native Rio Xingu environment. They absolutely must have their own cave or territory to feel secure.

Aquarist Note: The L264 is a powerful fish. Ensure that all large, heavy driftwood and rock structures are securely set, as this pleco will actively rearrange its chosen lair!
