The Charming Collector from the Rio Pachitea

Introduce one of the most beloved and sought-after small catfish to your aquarium with the Panda Cory (Corydoras panda). Hailing from the clear, slow-moving blackwater streams of the Rio Pachitea basin in Peru, this is a visual masterpiece of the nano-aquarium world. It is named for its stark, unique markings: a translucent pinkish-white body completely overlaid by three perfectly solid, distinct black patches—one 'mask' over its head and eyes, a large patch on its dorsal fin, and a prominent saddle patch over its tail base. This sharp contrast creates the undeniable 'panda' aesthetic that makes it a true showpiece.

Why You’ll Love the Panda Cory

Iconic & Distinctive Aesthetic: Their simple yet stunning three-patch "Panda" pattern is unique in the freshwater hobby and provides dramatic, sharp contrast on light substrates.

The "Peaceful" Community Star: They are a highly social, completely docile schooling fish that adds dramatic, active movement without bothering your other fish.

Tireless Bottom Dweller: As a diligent bottom-dweller, they spend their day actively patrolling the substrate for biofilm, leftover food, and detritus, helping to keep your tank clean.

Master of the Micro Tank: Reaching a final size of 3.5 to 4 cm, they are one of the most practical and mesmerizing choices for dedicated nano aquariums (like the 40-litre size).

Pro-Tips for a Happy Panda

The absolute most critical element for Panda Corys is substrate. To see their maximum color and preserve their delicate barbels, simulate their native environment with fine, soft sand. We highly recommend against gravel, as it can be abrasive. Because they are delicate, soft-water and high oxygen levels are essential for their health. Provide numerous plants, floating cover, or driftwood structures—as they rely heavily on feeling secure in a well-decorated tank. They must be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10 to prevent extreme stress and shyness.

Aquarist Note: Because of their delicate, soft-water nature, we place significant emphasis on proper acclimation. Be sure to check this species' specific requirements for pH (acidic, ideally below 7.0), temperature, and minimum schooling size. For the best visual display, use a single-species shoal in a large, beautifully planted tank!
