The Starlight Bristlenose Pleco (L183)
A Galaxy of Stars on Midnight Velvet
Prepare to be mesmerized by the Starlight Bristlenose Pleco (L183), an Ancistrus dolichopterus that truly lives up to its name. Originating from the shadowy blackwaters of the Rio Negro basin in Brazil, this pleco is a visual masterpiece. It features a stunning, velvety black or deep charcoal body that is meticulously dusted with tiny, bright white-to-yellowish spots, mimicking a dense star field. As the "true" white-seam bristlenose, it is famous for the sharp, continuous, solid white trim that outlines its entire dorsal and caudal fin.
Why You’ll Love the Starlight Bristlenose
Exceptional "Starlight" Contrast: The extreme juxtaposition of the solid black body against the sharp white fin seams and starry spots creates an unmatched visual elegance.
The "Bristle" Signature: As they mature, males develop intricate, dramatic fleshy tentacles ("bristles") on their snout, giving them a rugged, unique appearance.
Compact & Manageable: Reaching a final size of 4 to 5 inches, they are one of the most practical and popular choices for medium-sized aquariums (like the 20-gallon size).
The Community Janitor: Unlike some specialized feeders, L183s are diligent and efficient omnivores that actively graze on film, algae, and leftover food, helping to keep your tank clean.

Pro-Tips for a Happy Starlight
The L183 thrives in soft, acidic water, mimicking their native Rio Negro. Because they come from warmer waters, ensure your tank maintains the proper temperature. Provide plenty of caves, rockwork, and driftwood for them to rasp and seek shelter. A well-filtered tank with moderate-to-high current is essential.
Aquarist Note: While peaceful with other fish, male Starlight Bristlenose can be quite territorial towards other males, especially over favored caves. For smaller tanks (under 40 gallons), it is best to keep only one male or a single pair unless the tank is substantially broken up with hardscape.
